Can you sell peptides on Shopify? What to settle before your store opens.
Shopify will host a peptide store. None of Shopify's policies names peptides, and no processor's policy does either. Merchants read that as a yes, open the store, take payments, and find out months later what the silence meant.
If your store isn't open yet, you're in the best position you'll ever be in to get this right. There's no balance for anyone to hold and no processing history to explain. Here's what each document says and what to settle before launch day.
What Shopify's own rules say
The platform. Shopify's Acceptable Use Policy doesn't list products at all. Its main rule is that you "can't use Shopify to do anything that's illegal where you do business." It says nothing about peptides either way.
Shopify Payments. This is the one that matters. Shopify's help center keeps a list of what Shopify Payments won't support. Peptides aren't on it by name, but this line is:
"Pseudo pharmaceuticals: Pharmaceuticals and other products that make health claims that are not verified by a local or national regulatory body."
The same list also names "prescription drugs". Keep that in mind, because it comes up again below.
So Shopify hasn't banned peptides in writing. It has banned the way most peptide stores describe them. A product page that says what a compound does for recovery, fat loss or skin is making a health claim no regulator has verified.
What the processors underneath say
In the United States, Shopify Payments runs on Stripe and PayPal, so their rules apply too.
Stripe's restricted businesses list doesn't name peptides. Two lines on its prohibited list are the ones that get used:
- "Pseudo-pharmaceuticals or nutraceuticals that are not safe or make harmful claims"
- "Incorrectly labeled research chemicals"
PayPal's Acceptable Use Policy doesn't name them either. Its catch-all covers "other products that present a risk to consumer safety".
You can see all three side by side on our peptides page.
The "research use only" label
Most peptide stores print "for research use only" on every product. The idea is that a research chemical isn't a supplement, so the health-claims rules don't apply.
Here's our reading of how that plays out, and it's ours, not a policy quote. The label only helps if the rest of the store agrees with it. When a product says "research use only" and the same page talks about dosing, injection schedules, before-and-after results or what it does for the body, the reviewer sees a product sold for human use with a label saying otherwise. Stripe prohibits "incorrectly labeled research chemicals", so a label that contradicts the store can make your position worse than having no label.
GLP-1s get the hardest look
Semaglutide and tirzepatide are the active ingredients in prescription drugs. Shopify's list names "prescription drugs", and Stripe's restricted list, which means allowed only with approval, names "Card-not-present prescription-only products and pharmaceuticals". A store selling them as research peptides is close to both lines. Newer compounds that aren't approved anywhere don't escape this, because they're usually sold on the same weight-loss promise.
If GLP-1s are a big part of your catalogue, assume your application will be read with that in mind and plan for it.
What happens if you launch on Shopify Payments anyway
Signup goes through, because nothing at signup asks the question. Payments run normally for a while, long enough to build volume and start feeling safe. Then a review reaches the site, someone applies one of the clauses above, and the account is closed with the balance held against future chargebacks.
The worst outcome is a listing on MATCH, the card networks' list of terminated merchants, which follows the business and the people behind it for five years. We covered what to do in the first two days after a freeze in your payment processor froze your account. You don't want to need that article.
What to settle before you open
- Choose your payment provider before you choose your theme. You need a provider that underwrites peptides knowingly, and you tell it exactly what you sell. Shopify lets you use a third-party provider instead of Shopify Payments.
- Price in Shopify's extra fee. Orders paid through a third-party provider carry a Shopify fee on top of the provider's own, 2% on Basic down to 0.2% on Plus, per Shopify's pricing page. At high-risk rates, that can make a higher plan or a different platform cheaper.
- Write product copy that matches your label. If it's sold for research, the page reads like a research supply listing: compound, purity, batch, storage. No dosing, no benefits, no testimonials.
- Have a certificate of analysis for every batch and link it from the product. Underwriters ask for them, and so do buyers.
- Have sourcing documents ready. Expect to be asked where your product comes from before anyone approves you.
- Set up a second way to get paid. ACH or crypto can keep orders moving if your card provider reviews you. Either one is better than a five-year MATCH listing.
- Keep your catalogue honest at signup. Declare every compound, GLP-1s included. Leaving one off is how a category problem turns into a misrepresentation problem.
We read Shopify's Acceptable Use Policy, its Shopify Payments eligibility page and its pricing page on 4 October 2026, and Stripe's and PayPal's policies the same day. They're linked in place. Policies change, so check them yourself before you act on this. It isn't legal advice, and whether a compound is lawful to sell where you ship it is a question for a qualified attorney.
We help peptide merchants set this up before launch: copy that matches the label, the provider application, and a backup way to get paid. If you're still planning, book a free call and we'll go through your catalogue with you.
Where does your own store stand?
This piece covers the rule. What happens to you depends on your own catalogue, your claims and your paperwork. We'll tell you where you stand even if it doesn't lead to work for us.
Both are free, and neither is a sales call. The check only asks for your web address. The call takes thirty minutes, and you leave with an answer even if we never work together. Ready to start now? Tell us what you sell.
